Isuzu Hicom Malaysia donates trucks to institutions to support TVET education

Quick look:

  • The initiative is part of Isuzu Hicom Malaysia’s CSR framework to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical industry needs for technical education in the East Coast.
  • The move aligns directly with Malaysia’s national agenda to elevate Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Isuzu HICOM Malaysia Sdn Bhd (IHM) – the joint venture company between Isuzu and DRB-HICOM which assembles commercial vehicles – recently handed over more than 11 Isuzu trucks to 7 vocational and technical institutions across Pahang and Terengganu. IHM chose the institutions as it is a corporate citizen in the region, having its plant in Pekan.

CSR initiative
The initiative forms part of the commercial vehicle manufacturer’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) framework, aiming to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical industry needs for technical education in the East Coast. The move aligns directly with Malaysia’s national agenda to elevate Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

The fleet, which consists of refurbished Isuzu ELF and FORWARD models, will serve as hands-on training tools so students have more detailed automotive engineering, component analysis, vehicle maintenance, and driving training.

Used for homologation tests
The vehicles provided were used for Homologation testing between 2012 and 2014. These tests included evaluations conducted on complete vehicles, such as brake tests, noise tests, diesel emission tests, and speedometer tests.

In total, there are 113 test items, all of which must comply with UN Regulations. Only vehicles that successfully pass all required tests are approved by JPJ and can be permitted to operate on public roads in Malaysia.

Nurturing skilled talent
Speaking at the handover ceremony held at the IHM facility in Pekan, IHM Chief Executive Officer Koshi Yamaguchi emphasized that the company’s responsibilities extend well beyond its production lines. He noted that by integrating responsible practices into daily operations, the company hopes to actively nurture skilled talent and support the broader evolution of the local automotive and transport sectors.

Beyond the educational benefits, the initiative serves a dual purpose by advancing IHM’s internal sustainability goals. By refurbishing and repurposing these vehicles, the manufacturer effectively extends their operational lifecycles and minimizes waste, blending environmental consciousness with long-term community skill-building.
