Brunei first market for new Proton Saga and AMA Platform

Quick look

  • Brunei is the first overseas market for the new Saga which was launched in its home market in November 2025.

  • The launch of the model – Proton’s bestseller – also marks the international appearance of the AMA platform developed and owned by Proton.

Following its domestic debut in November 2025, the all-new Proton Saga has officially made its first appearance outside Malaysia with its launch in Brunei. Authorised distributor PAD Motors Sdn Bhd is importing Proton’s bestseller in two versions – the Executive starting from B$16,800 (around RM56,300) and the Premium priced from  B$18,800 (RM58,100) with a B$500 rebate for the first 100 buyers.

Though taking a relatively small number of vehicles from Proton, Brunei remains a vital partner for the Malaysian automaker’s export ambitions. As one of its oldest overseas markets, it often serves as a primary launchpad for new models. The launch of the new Saga follows the introduction of the latest X50 in January, reinforcing a refreshed line-up that Proton hopes will drive its goal of achieving 30% of total sales from exports by 2030.

Also launch of AMA Platform overseas
The launch of the latest Saga in Brunei is also significant as it is the export premiere for the Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) developed by Proton.  Unlike previous platforms that were largely adapted from existing partner designs, the AMA is a locally developed foundation intended for a new generation of models. Because it is Proton’s own platform, export of the models to any market is possible and the models also do not have the penalty of royalties to be added to their cost.

The shift to the AMA platform brings measurable improvements to the Saga’s structural performance. By utilizing Hot-Press-Formed (HPF) steel in critical areas like the B-pillars and floor cross-members, the chassis achieves a 25% improvement in torsional stiffness. This structural reinforcement is a core component of the brand’s push to meet more stringent international safety standards.

The AMA platform also positions the Tanjong Malim manufacturing complex as a specialized hub for vehicle development. By owning the intellectual property for the platform, Proton has greater autonomy in product definition and cost control, allowing for faster response times to the specific needs of the ASEAN market.
