Chery has delivered 30,000 vehicles in Malaysia since mid-2023

Quick look

  • Since returning to the Malaysian market, Chery has delivered 30,000 vehicles and is among the top 10 bestselling brands.

  • The automaker is making a RM2.2 billion investment with a Smart Auto Industrial Park in Selangor, with the first phase to be completed before June 2026.

  • Chery Malaysia has been a good corporate citizen, supporting sports and helping local communities in meaningful ways.

To the younger generation, Chery is a newcomer in the Malaysian market, arriving along with the wave of Chinese brands since the end of 2022. Actually, the brand was already in the market 20 years ago but at that time, it was not marketed directly and handled by a local business partner.

When Chery returned in mid-2023, it was with direct control on all the activities, which included local assembly. This was a significant difference from before: with the manufacturer directly involved and having its own company in Malaysia, customers would benefit from greater attention to sales and aftersales services. Chery would also have a closer connection and better understanding of the market conditions and needs.

OMODA 5, one of the first models to be launched, was the brand’s top seller in 2025.

Among the top 10 brands
By the end of 2025, Chery delivered 30,073 vehicles in Malaysia, with 40% sold in the last year alone. This indicates the increasing popularity of the brand which has been one of the fastest growing in the market. Although its individual models are not in the top 10, consistently high sales numbers of each model in the wide range have added up to put Chery among the top 10 brands in 2025.

Also notable is the fact that almost all of its models are assembled locally, at the Sime Motors-owned Inokom plant in Kedah. This includes its only fully electric model, the OMODA E5 which was launched in March 2024.

Big investment plans
Chery has plans to make big investments to help develop the auto industry further.Apart from already assembling vehicles at Inokom, it has already announced plans to establish the Chery Smart Auto Industrial Park in Lembah Beringin, Selangor, as a key pillar of its long-term strategy.

By the middle of the year, the first phase of the RM2.2 billion Chery Smart Auto Industrial Park in Lembah Beringin, Selangor, will be completed. Besides vehicle assembly, there will also be other activities on the 200-acre site.

The RM2.2 billion facility covering over 200 acres will expand production capacity, enabling Chery to export to neighbouring countries as well and create more jobs and economic opportunities. The first phase is scheduled for completion during the first half of 2026.

Good corporate citizen
Chery has not just been making and selling cars but has also contributed in meaningful ways to various communities. For example, it was the first to come forward with assistance after the fire at Putra Heights in Selangor, loaning vehicles to those affected and reduce the disruption to their daily lives.

Homeowners affected by the massive fire in Putra Heights in April 2025 were loaned vehicles by Chery Malaysia to minimise disruption to their daily travel.

Support for sports
Chery Malaysia has also contributed to national development through its support of the National Sports Trust Fund in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This initiative is designed to strengthen the local sports ecosystem by funding national and international sporting events, fostering athlete participation and supporting programmes that develop young talent.

Chery Malaysia gives generous support to Malaysian sports and has even rewarded medal winners with cars.

In efforts to bridge the gap between education and employment for skilled workers, Chery Malaysia teamed up with the Belia Mahir Project to help graduates transition smoothly into the workforce, offering opportunities to work at Chery and contribute to Malaysia’s automotive industry.

Global success
Chery’s success in Malaysia mirrors that of its global business. It has been the top passenger vehicle exporter from China for 23 consecutive years, including 2025 when it shipped 1.344 million units overseas. With a position in the Fortune Global 500 list, the automaker is a truly global player.
