While sales of its fully electric models have been steady, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has not stagnated its other electrified models with EQ Hybrid Technology and has just added the first GLE plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) to its range.

The GLE is the fourth generation of a SUV model that began life as the M-Class (left) in 1997. The SUV models originate from a Mercedes-Benz factory in the USA that is the global production hub.

“The new Mercedes-Benz GLE 400 e 4MATIC with EQ Hybrid Technology underscores Mercedes-Benz’s strategic commitment to driving the transition towards sustainable mobility in Malaysia. As a plug-in hybrid variant, it serves as a bridge to full electrification, giving customers the flexibility to experience cutting-edge technology at their own pace. This approach reflects our philosophy of offering the luxury of choice, while continuing to deliver long-term value, innovation, and confidence for our customers,” said Amanda Zhang, CEO & President, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

Electrified powertrain
Assembled locally and priced from RM498,888, the GLE 400 e 4MATIC’s PHEV powertrain consists of a 2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine producing 252 ps/400 Nm and an electric motor which generates 115 kW/440 Nm. The combined system output is not the sum of both propulsion units due to factors such as power sharing and blending, and some efficiency losses so for this powertrain, it works out to be 381 ps/650 Nm.

Powering the motor is a rechargeable 31.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which can enable the SUV to run on just electricity for up to 114 kms. That should be enough for daily commuting and if you recharge at night to top up the battery, you might not have to go to a petrol station for a long time. Recharging from 10% to 80% takes around 29 minutes, but that’s if a DC fast-charger is used.

The petrol from the 65-litre tank will slowly get used up because a hybrid electric powertrain uses both power sources as needed. When stronger acceleration or high speeds are needed, then more engine power is used but in town, only the motor might propel the vehicle. So the range on a full tank could be up to 1,000 kms or more, which is now becoming a common figure for PHEVs.

With a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmissions and 4MATIC sending power to all four wheels, the GLE has a claimed 0 to 100 km/h time of 6.1 seconds, and a top speed capability of 210 km/h.

Standard AIRMATIC suspension
Ride comfort is enhanced with the AIRMATIC Package providing intelligent management of the double wishbone/multilink suspension. The AIRMATIC system operates by using compressed air to adjust the suspension height and stiffness, adapting to surface and driving conditions instantly for optimal performance.

AMG Line
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has included the AMG Line package with the GLE 400 e 4MATIC and it comes with the diamond grille featuring the Mercedes-Benz pattern in chrome. The AMG front apron has a chrome trim element, while the rear apron has a diffuser-look.

The ‘light flare’ in the headlamps is characteristic of Mercedes-Benz. With the MULTIBEAM LED with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, drivers benefit from optimal visibility across a wide range of lighting conditions.

Enhancing its dynamic character are the large 21-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels with Pirelli P-Zero tyres, and aluminium-look illuminated running boards with rubber studs.

The AMG Line adds a sportier image within. There’s generous space for 5 occupants who enjoy THERMOTRONIC automatic climate and electrically-adjustable rear seats. 64-colour ambient lighting enhances the cabin atmosphere while a panoramic sunroof lets in the sky on cool days.

The driver has a multifunction sports steering wheel wrapped in nappa leather, flattened at the bottom and perforated in the grip area. At the feet, the AMG sports pedal system in brushed stainless steel will certainly emphasise sportiness.

The second generation of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system provides intuitive connectivity and control. Both the driver and central displays measure 12.3 inches, with the central display offering direct touchscreen operation.

The 360° camera view not only makes manoeuvring in tight parking spaces easy but, when driving off-road, the transparent bonnet function displays a virtual view of the ground ahead. This allows the driver to go along uneven and rocky ground with more confidence as any obstacles can be seen.
