The motoring conditions in different regions of the world may vary and for this reason, independent safety organisations have formulated their own assessment standards which are adapted from industry-recognised global standards.
BYD, as one of the leading global brands (in fact, No. 1 in electrified vehicles) gives safety top priority and with its significant presence in many ASEAN markets, it is also making sure that its vehicles meet or exceed the standards of The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP).

The organisation, which is part of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), was established in December 2011 and conducted its first vehicle assessments in early 2013. To date, it has assessed over 80 different vehicle models, covering approximately 90% of the passenger vehicles sold in the Southeast Asian market.
Recently, ASEAN NCAP carried out an assessment on its first BYD model – the Seal – and the results of its assessment rate the fully electric model with the maximum of 5 stars. In fact, the overall score of 92.07 points is among the highest ever recorded by ASEAN NCAP.
This high score was made up of scores from Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) with 38.44 points, Child Occupant Protection (COP) with 16.60 points, Safety Assist (SA) with 19.52 points, and Motorcyclist Safety (MS) with 17.50 points.

Crash testing in China
The crash testing was conducted in collaboration with CAERI (China Automotive Engineering Research Institute), a state-owned Chinese company that serves as a major research and development centre for the automotive industry. CAERI’s facilities in Chongqing were used with ASEAN NCAP engineers present to observe and collect data for analysis.
The Seal tested was made in China (although it could be among the models assembled in Malaysia in 2026) offers various safety technologies across all its variants that are sold in Southeast Asian countries.

It is equipped with a comprehensive list of standard passive and active features that includes 9 airbags, Electronic Stability Control, ABS, Autonomous Emergency Braking (including for motorcycles), Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Auto High Beam and ISOFIX mounting points for childseats.

Praise from ASEAN NCAP
“ASEAN NCAP acknowledges BYD’s support for efforts to strengthen vehicle safety in the region. We praise the brand for its commitment to road safety, as evidenced by the inclusion of various significant vehicle safety features in its models. This is clearly evident in their latest launched model, the BYD Seal, in which the majority of the technologies are available as standard equipment across all its variants,” the organisation mentioned in its report.
