Electric vehicles are still fairly new to the market, having started their surge from 2023 when the government initiated a big push towards electric mobility by offering duty-exemption on EVs for a few years. With this push came other developments such as the installation of charging stations which can be at residences as well.
Supporting industries such as the insurance industry have been adapting their business to EVs which, in some ways, have additional or special requirements. These also extend to charging stations which some owners might install at their homes for greater convenience.
The additional coverage
These ancillary items can also be covered by insurance and those whose EVs are covered by Zurich Malaysia can now also include coverage of EV batteries, home wall chargers, portable charging accessories, etc. Enhanced special perils protection is also available (at additional charge) to cover battery damage due to water.
The coverage – known as Z-Driver EV Protect – is just like windscreen damage coverage and is added on to the main insurance (comprehensive) policy. The additional charge is RM120 for the same period as the policy.

“EV owners face a unique set of risks that go beyond traditional motor insurance and takaful. Z-Driver EV Protect is designed to address these concerns, offering practical coverage that reflects how EVs are used today. It’s part of our commitment to making protection more relevant, accessible, and aligned with our customers’ evolving lifestyles,” said Foo Chuen Hou, Chief Distribution Officer, General Segment of Zurich Malaysia.

With Z-Driver EV Protect, the EV owner gets home wall charger coverage up to RM15,000 and portable charging cable coverage up to RM2,000. Additionally, there’s personal liability coverage while charging up to RM50,000 (eg if you get electrocuted), and compassionate allowance for incidents at public charging stations up to RM20,000.
