Although never officially sold in Malaysia, the Suzuki Wagon R has been a global model for the automaker that is sold in 75 countries. It has been made in India, Hungary, Pakistan and Indonesia, besides Japan. Recently, cumulative sales of the passed 10 million units since the first generation was launched in 1993.
While its compact size has been appreciated in Japan, the Wagon R has also been popular in other markets where it has evolved to meet local needs. For example, in India, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R run on CNG (compressed natural gas) which offer higher fuel efficiency and economic efficiency than petrol-powered vehicles.

Over 6 generations, the model has seen improved efficiency, environmental performance and enhanced value. The ‘R’ in the model name stands for ‘Revolution and Relaxation’, and the tallness of the car gave it a feeling of spaciousness even though it is a kei car.

The Wagon R was the bestselling kai car in Japan for a 9-year period and was also supplied to Mazda which sold it as the AZ-Wagon from 1994 to 2012 and again as the Flair in 2012.
