2029 Lexus LFA previewed as a fully electric concept

Quick look

  • Fully electric LFA successor, expected around 2029 and without volume limits.

  • Shares its lightweight aluminium structure with the Toyota GR GT.

  • New design language no longer use the iconic Lexus spindle grille.

The Toyota 2000GT was a legend as a supercar in its time (the 1960s) and 45 years later, the Lexus LFA was equally legendary. Only 500 units were ever made, between December 2010 and December 2012. In due course (around 2029), there will be a new LFA and this time, it won’t have a limited production run.

Fully electric
As a preview of what to expect, Toyota has revealed the Lexus LFA Concept which is the basis of a future supercar from the brand. Technical details are few at this time but it’s clear that, unlike its V10 predecessor, the new LFA will be fully electric, replicating the original’s hyper-focused performance spirit in the electric age.

Unlike the original LFA, the successor is not a unique standalone development but having a shared foundation with the GR GT sportscar (which will have a 4-litre V8 hybrid electric powertrain) recently shown. This means it will have a low-slung body and lightweight, high-rigidity aluminium frame plus superior aerodynamic performance.

The design has actually been seen earlier as the Sport Concept which was displayed at the Monterey Car Week 2025 in California (as well as the Japan Mobility Show 2025). The flowing silhouette inherits the original LFA’s sculptural beauty with classic coupe proportions.

Incorporating modern touches such as distinctive floating checkmark headlights, the designers have shaped it to represent a new ideal sportscar form with universal appeal.

No more spindle grille
The new design language will no longer have the spindle grille, a signature design element of the brand. It first appeared on the LF-Gh concept in 2011 and evolved with different models. However, in recent times, Lexus designers have been slowly erasing it – and that’s at the direction of Akio Toyoda.

The latest RX, for example, has integrated the spindle shape into the front end, calling it a ‘spindle body’. Thankfully, this new direction has been given as it seemed that the design element was expanding ridiculously, with an extreme evolution used for the LS Concept.

Driver-Centric Cockpit
As a genuine sportscar should be, the cabin environment is kept minimal. There’s a curved digital instrument panel behind a GT3-style steering wheel with functional components located around the driver. The layout of the switches makes blind-touch operation possible for intuitive vehicle control, while the steering wheel design eliminates the need for changing the hand grip when turning.

Overall, the minimalist approach weaves together the appeal of mechanical design and a simple interior space to create a uniquely immersive experience for the driver.

Like the GR GT, the Lexus LFA Concept embodies Toyota’s ‘Shikinen Sengu’ principle. This is a Shinto practice of rebuilding the Ise Shrine once every 20 years to pass on the skills to the next generation. Toyota also has the same belief which it applies to ensure techniques and skills are passed on by car-making veterans to a younger generation so they can be learned and evolved.
