Electrification for efficiency
Under the bonnet, the Golf R-Line introduces a mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) powertrain for the first time in a Golf in Malaysia. While hybrid electric powertrains usually mean that an electric motor is present to share the job of moving the car, a MHEV uses a small electric motor/generator (usually 48V) for the purpose of improving fuel efficiency and enhancing acceleration. No recharging is needed and the cost is lower than other electrified powertrains.

The petrol engine is a 1.5-litre eTSI turbocharged unit that produces 150 ps/250 Nm, mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission.
Sharper lines, aerodynamic enhancements
The exterior of the locally-assembled model features sharper lines and aerodynamic enhancements along with the new IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights and a unique illuminated Volkswagen logo on the front bumper.

The headlights incorporate a new high-performance main beam. The redesigned IQ.LIGHT 3D LED taillight clusters, paired with dynamic turn signals and animated rear graphics add an extra element of style to function.
Digital, drive-focussed interior
The interior follows the same digital, driver-focused theme as the other models of the current generation, offering a balance of sportiness with high-tech convenience. The 12.9-inch Media infotainment display has a new MIB4 system, complemented by a 10-inch Digital Cockpit Pro and an IDA voice assistant.
