Smart Lanes to be implemented on LEKAS Highway from this Thursday

Quick look

  • Starting February 12, 2026, the emergency lane between the Kajang Selatan and Kajang Perdana interchanges will function as an extra travel lane daily from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm.

  • Motorists must follow specific “Smart Lane Start/End” signage and can only enter the lane when the green LED indicators are illuminated.

In 2023, almost 800,000 new vehicles were registered; last year and the year before, over 800,000 vehicles were added each year to the vehicle population in Malaysia. That’s 2.4 million vehicles added to the roads nationwide, with the Klang Valley having the highest proportion in the country.

Over the past two years, more than 1.6 million new vehicles have been added to the roads, with the majority in the Klang Valley. So it’s not surprising if congestion is getting worse.

So it shouldn’t be surprising that congestion is getting more severe and for some time now, motorists have been complaining about the situation. Some say that it’s because the festive period is coming soon but it is also a fact that there are many more vehicles moving on the roads. And although many new highways have been built over the past 10 years, the traffic numbers are growing much faster.

PLUS introduced the Smart Lane concept in 2019 along the NKVE.

It takes time to build a new highway, but highway concessionaires have been using a faster solution since 2019 – Smart Lanes. First implemented on the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) by PLUS, the Smart Lane concept is now used in many other areas along the main highways.

Although originally intended to be used during festive seasons when traffic volumes increased greatly, the concept is now being used regularly as a way to ease congestion by making available an extra lane on the side.

Lebuhraya Kajang-Seremban Sdn Bhd (LEKAS) has announced a new Smart Lane system that will be active during peak hours. This proactive traffic management plan focuses on improving the flow from the Kajang Selatan Interchange (LEKAS) toward the Kajang Perdana Interchanges (SILK). By optimizing existing road space, the operator aims to provide a smoother commuting experience for thousands of daily road-users.

Starts on February 12
The implementation of this congestion mitigation plan will commence tomorrow, February 12, 2026. Smart Lane activation is strategically focused on two specific stretches between KM 1.0 and KM 0.4. The first section covers KM 1.0 to KM 0.1 northbound, facilitating traffic toward Putrajaya via the SILK Highway. The second section spans KM 0.0 to KM 0.4 southbound, aimed at easing congestion for those traveling from Sg. Long and Kajang Perdana back toward LEKAS.

6 am – 9 pm
Motorists can expect the Smart Lane to be active daily between 6:00 am and 9:00 pm. During these periods, the emergency lane is temporarily converted into a usable travel lane to accommodate the high volume of morning and evening commuters. Outside of these approved operating hours, the lane is strictly deactivated and reverts to its original purpose for emergency use only.

To ensure clarity for drivers, LEKAS has established a clear visual signaling system for the Smart Lane. The lane is marked with specific “Smart Lane Start” and “Smart Lane End” signage to indicate where motorists may enter and must exit the extra lane. Additionally, green LED lights are used to signal when the lane is officially open, while the lights are turned off when the lane is closed to traffic.

Safety remains the top priority and the implementation includes the strategic placement of traffic cones along selected stretches, blinkers, and advance advisory signage. These measures are intended to guide motorists safely and prevent confusion during the transition between standard and Smart Lane configurations.

Pay attention to signs
Motorists are strongly advised to observe all advance warning and directional signage when approaching the Smart Lane zones. LEKAS encourages drivers to select their appropriate lanes early to avoid sudden lane changes, which can lead to accidents or further delays. Maintaining strict lane discipline is emphasized as a key factor in ensuring the success of the new traffic flow system.

The highway operator will be monitoring and conducting performance evaluations. Any necessary adjustments to the operating hours or physical layout will be made in consultation with the relevant authorities. This data-driven approach ensures that the Smart Lane continues to meet the evolving needs of the motoring public.
