By now, the whole world knows that there has been a terrible natural disaster in Nepal with many towns and villages destroyed and thousands missing.
Aid from many countries is being rushed over and PROTON is contributing a fleet of drones to assist in ongoing relief and disaster management operations. The drones, valued at a total of around RM200,000, will enhance site assessment capabilities in affected areas with difficult terrain.
Drones transported with SMART contingent
The equipment handover took place at the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) headquarters in Pulau Meranti, Selangor. Coordinated through Malaysia’s National Disaster Management Agency, the drones are being transported to Nepal together with SMART personnel as part of Malaysia’s broader humanitarian mission. The equipment will remain permanently in Nepal to support long-term emergency response activities.
Commenting on the supply of drones, Edmund Lim Meng Thong, CEO of Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd, said: “During a disaster, having a clear view of affected areas can make a real difference to response efforts. Drones can provide valuable aerial visibility, particularly in locations that may be difficult or unsafe to reach immediately.”
He said the SMART team will provide assistance in training rescue personnel in Nepal how to operate the equipment. “We hope this contribution will be useful to the government of Nepal, both during the current humanitarian effort and in strengthening its disaster response capabilities over time,” he added.
Export market since 1980s
Nepal holds a long-standing position in Proton’s global footprint, having been an early export destination for its cars as far back as the late 1980s.
Today, the brand’s presence has been expanded, since March 2025, with the introduction of Proton e.MAS electrified models distributed by Jagdamba Motors, its business partner in the country.
