Under the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Engine Oil for Motor Vehicles) Order 2024, all engine oil products sold in Malaysia must be certified by SIRIM QAS International to ensure that they are genuine products. Although this regulation was to have taken effect from October 2025, the implementation was postponed to October 2025 to allow oil companies to sell off existing stocks (without SIRIM certification) and prepare to meet the requirement.
Although all oils by reputable brands are of a high quality and meet internationally recognised performance standards like those from the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC), there is still the problem of fake products being sold.
Fake products can damage engines
Apart from cheating consumers, these fake oils are likely to also cause damage to engines as they are of poor quality and are known to often be recycled from used oil. As the inferior oil is sold in containers that closely resemble genuine products, consumers can be easily misled, hence the need for such a regulation to protect them.
The SIRIM 58 Standard – Certification Scheme for Genuine Product (Engine Oil for Motor Vehicles) has to be met for certification to be granted. This scheme ensures compliance with standards, supporting legitimate manufacturers and importers. The presence of the SIRIM Genuine Product Label on the product container will also give consumers peace of mind.
Independent assurance and certification
The major oil companies in Malaysia are complying with the regulation and Petron Malaysia confirms that its range of engine oils for cars, motorcycles and even tractors have been awarded the SIRIM Genuine Product License. This provides independent assurance to customers that Petron engine oils are genuine and consistently manufactured to specification.
The range of Petron lubricants that carry the new SIRIM stickers are:

“Petron is proud to have been awarded the SIRIM Genuine Product License which reinforces the quality, authenticity and reliability of our engine oils. It also reflects our commitment to provide better engine protection for our customers’ vehicles,” said Mohd Asri Ibrahim, Head of Commercial Business at Petron Malaysia.
