Fully synthetic oil for motor vehicles appeared in Malaysia in the 1980s, with Mobil 1 being the pioneering product that introduced motorists to more superior engine lubrication. Since then, many other oil companies have also come out with their own synthetic oil products which generally are at the higher end of the range.
Caltex Havoline has been in the market for many decades and it too has a fully synthetic oil in its range. Recently, Caltex Malaysia introduced the latest product which is specially formulated for engines in hybrid electric powertrains.
Addressing specific issues
The new product is Havoline Fully Synthetic Hybrid SAE 0W-20 with a formulation that addresses some of the specific issues with the engines in hybrid electric powertrains which work with electric motors. Some of these issues include water and fuel contamination, low oil temperatures, and the potential for increased wear due to intermittent engine operation.
With advanced Caltex technology, the new Havoline oil has good water and fuel dilution performance as a strong emulsion if formed in the presence of water, resulting in smoother oil flow.
Control of slude formation
The low temperatures also cause sludge formation which can reduce lubricant effectiveness, apart from impacting flow. The additives in the formulation minimise the formation of sludge and varnish deposit on the surface of engine parts, keeping the inside of the engine cleaner and allowing oil to flow around smoothly.
As with all Caltex engine oils, Havoline Fully Synthetic Hybrid SAE 0W-20 also provides rust and corrosion protection. A coating of oil forms a barrier between components to protect them, extending their service life and allowing the engine to run smoothly and at optimum performance.

“Hybrid electric powertrains are becoming an increasingly popular choice among motorists in Malaysia, resulting in a demand for specially formulated lubricants that cater to such powertrains. Caltex’s proprietary technology will be a core differentiator in being ahead of customer’s needs. Our newest generation of engine oils for hybrid powertrains builds on the success of our previous Caltex Havoline product line in the market and raises the bar for product performance across the industry, providing drivers with confidence and peace of mind that they are taking the best care of their vehicles,” said Dean Gilbert, Country Chairman of Caltex Malaysia.
Havoline Fully Synthetic Hybrid SAE 0W-20, which meets the latest API SP standard is available in a 4-litre pack for RM228 at selected Caltex stations as well as from Caltex Official Stores on Lazada and Shopee.
