Three years ago, GWM (Great Wall Motor) began direct operations in Malaysia with the establishment of GWM Malaysia. It was not the automaker’s first entry in Malaysia as it had already been exporting and even assembling vehicles some 14 years earlier. However, at that time, GWM’s business was handled by a local partner which also assembled some models.
With the market having grown considerably since then and with the government’s push towards electrification, GWM decided to come in and be directly involved in its business to grow it, joining the new wave of Chinese automakers entering the market.

GWM had one advantage in that it is among China’s top exporters, having started selling its vehicles outside China in 1998. Today, it has a presence in over 170 countries and regions and has vast experience in overseas business.

Not just here to sell
Understanding that Malaysia is not merely a market to just sell its products in, GWM charted a long-term plan that included a commitment to contribute to the development of the auto industry, especially towards electrification. As part of its long-term vision for Malaysia, GWM is making investments in local assembly and introducing New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) which include hybrid electric vehicles as well as fully electric vehicles.
“Malaysia is one of GWM’s most dynamic and promising markets in Southeast Asia. In just three years, we have built a strong foundation of trust, innovation, and local engagement. Moving forward, we are committed to deepening localisation, expanding our product line-up, and enhancing the ownership experience,” said Cui Anqi, Managing Director of GWM Malaysia.

Brand development
Initially, GWM focussed on brand development, starting with HAVAL for SUVs and ORA for EVs. The dealer network was also vital to growth and today, there are over 30 outlets nationwide to sell new vehicles and support owners. From two brands, GWM Malaysia has added the TANK off-road brand and will soon also launch the WEY premium MPV brand.

The growing trust and acceptance by the market is evident in the steady growth of sales. The HAVAL H6 HEV is now recognised as the No. 2 hybrid SUV in Malaysia and the No. 1 Chinese hybrid SUV. Adhering to GWM’s philosophy of ‘All Powertrains. All Scenarios. All Users’, GWM Malaysia aims to offer more choices and more possibilities for every journey and mobility need.

New phase of growth
As it starts its fourth year, GWM Malaysia is now embarking on a new phase of growth with further investments. GWM already has one model – the HAVAL H6 HEV – assembled locally in Melaka and will be adding another one in the near future. GWM’s long-term business strategy is anchored by 4 key globalisation pillars – Locally Built, Locally Operated, Locally Cultivated, and Supply Chain Integrated.
In line with its vision of technology leadership, GWM Malaysia will introduce its advanced Hi4 intelligent hybrid system in future models, delivering smarter performance and efficiency suited to Malaysia’s driving conditions.

Made for Malaysia
Malaysian customers can be assured of vehicles that are properly engineered and tuned for Malaysian conditions. As a major global exporter, GWM understands that conditions differ in different countries. There are different road conditions and the driving styles also vary, both of which require some adjustments to be made to drivetrains and suspension.
The automaker sends engineering teams to each country to study conditions and then make the necessary adjustments. In fact, the team’s personal experience of Malaysian roads made them understand that the tuning of vehicles which are okay on roads in China is not suitable. So they have adjusted the suspension to be more compatible with our types of roads. This is one example of how a conscientious manufacturer makes an effort to ensure its products are right for the market.

This also supports GWM’s intentions to be a long-term player. “GWM is not here for the short term. We are here to build long-term trust with Malaysians through our products, our people, and our partnerships,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer of GWM Malaysia. “Our focus is on delivering genuine value, not just in price but in experience, quality, and care.”
