GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV – RM20,000 cheaper than PHEV version but same First Class Experience

The GWM WEY G9 MPV PHEV is among the new generation of MPVs from China which have been game-changing, presenting a challenge to the established Toyota Alphard/Vellfire.

Local assembly
Introduced in January 2026, the G9 has been selling well and passed the 2,000-unit mark. It is assembled in Melaka and some of the production is also exported to Thailand.

GWM Malaysia has broadened its local luxury multi-purpose vehicle lineup with the introduction of the new GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV. This self-charging hybrid variant joins the existing plug-in hybrid model to provide local buyers with expanded powertrain options tailored to diverse driving requirements.

Self-charging battery
GWM Malaysia has now added a second G9 option – the G9 Hi4 HEV – which is priced at RM249,800, which is RM20,000 less than the PHEV version. Though it has an electrified powertrain, the G9 Hi4 HEV has a smaller 1.67 kWh battery which would be a lower cost than the one in the PHEV which is 44.2 kWh.

The HEV version is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine which works with electric motors. The hybrid electric drivetrain generates a combined system output of 263 kW (358 ps)/782 Nm of torque, delivered to all four wheels through GWM’s Hi4 intelligent electronically controlled all-wheel drive system.

Up to 845 kms range
With the electric motor sharing some of the work, the petrol engine is not used all the time, so fuel consumption is significantly reduced. GWM claims 15.4 kms/litre which can give the G9 a range of up to 845 kms on a full tank.

Like the PHEV version, the HEV version can also run on just electric power for a short distance. It also has a shorter overall range that the PHEV but the driver does not have to worry about finding a charging station. This is because a HEV is self-charging, using the engine as a generator and also channelling lost energy during braking to the battery.

Spacious and premium inside
Within the spacious cabin is seating for 7 persons in a 2+2+3 layout. Premium features include Nappa leather upholstery, seat ventilation, and 10-point massage functions. The second row has ‘Zero Gravity’ Captain Chairs with electric legrests and 6-way electric adjustments. HALOSonic active noise cancellation together with acoustic glass on the windscreen and front doors enhances cabin quietness for a more relaxed journey.

Like the PHEV version, the premium environment is complemented by comprehensive modern technology for convenience, safety and connectivity. A 14.6-inch infotainment display and 12.3-inch digital instrument panel keep the driver informed of vehicle operation and to manage systems.

The instrument panel is supplemented by a head-up display system projected on the windscreen so the driver can see important information without looking away from the road ahead.

Connectivity is via wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while a 50W charging pad enables wireless recharging of a smartphone. Entertainment on the move is provided by a premium audio system with no less than 21 speakers strategically positioned around the cabin.

With its overall length of 5 metres (and 1985 mm width), there’s still 233 litres of cargo space at the back when the third row is in use. The seats can fold down and also move along the floor on rails to increase the volume up to 1,725 litres. Entry is through two powered sliding doors with a sensor-operated power tailgate.

Driver assistance is aided by a digital rearview mirror, a 360-degree surround-view camera featuring a transparent chassis view, and automated parking assistance.

For peace of mind
Confident of build quality and reliability, GWM Malaysia provides a 6-year vehicle warranty with no limit on mileage after first registration. The high-voltage battery pack, electric drive motor, and motor control unit have a separate warranty that is 8 years long (or maximum of 180,000 kms).

Additional ownership benefits include free scheduled maintenance inclusive of labour and parts during the first 5 years, complimentary vehicle service telematics, and a Touch ‘n Go RFID tag with the vehicle.

“Whether customers choose the electric driving capability of the PHEV or the everyday flexibility of the HEV, they can look forward to the same exceptional space, comfort and refinement that define the GWM WEY G9. The choice is different, but the First Class experience remains the same,” said Stan Li Hao, Managing Director, Commercial Operations, GWM Malaysia.
