One of the new generation of premium MPVs from China, GWM’s WEY G9 has rapidly established a strong presence on Malaysian roads. Although the powerful Competition Commission makes it an offence to show current model sales figures, data from the JPJ website indicates that the model has been the leading luxury MPV or among the most popular (depending on the month) since being launched.
To date, since arriving in the market in January 2026, almost 2,000 units of the G9 have been delivered around the country – all assembled locally at a plant in Melaka. GWM Malaysia’s quick move to local assembly has allowed the brand to quickly grow its numbers.
Complementing PHEV variant
Capitalizing on this momentum, GWM Malaysia is adding the G9 Hi4 HEV to complement the G9 PHEV as an alternative route into luxury people-movers. Like the PHEV version, the G9 HEV also has an electrified powertrain for efficiency and range.
The HEV powertrain GWM’s advanced Hi4 (Hybrid Intelligent 4WD) technology which bridges the gap between the capability of 4-wheel drive and the efficiency of 2-wheel drive. The powertrain pairs a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 4-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, dual electric motors, and a 1.67 kWh high voltage battery.
Working together, the combined system output is 358 ps/782 Nm which is more than adequate to move a vehicle of this size and weight with brisk acceleration and sustained high cruising speeds.
Self-charging
While a PHEV can be recharged, a HEV is self-charging. All the driver has to do is refill with petrol at periodic intervals and does not need to look for a charging station. That gives longer-distance freedom for motorists who prefer traditional refuelling convenience with electrified efficiency.
In other respects, the new G9 variant has the core attributes that have made many see it as great value for money. The spacious 3-row cabin has a quiet environment with active noise cancellation features while Nappa leather seating with powered adjustability, premium acoustics, and comprehensive intelligent driver assistance systems make every journey a Business Class pleasure.
GWM Malaysia has not revealed the full specifications and price yet but those who already like a G9 and want to own one at what is likely to be a lower price can make a booking at any authorised GWM dealership nationwide.
