Since beginning business operations in Malaysia just 4 years ago, GWM Malaysia has demonstrated its commitment to contribute to the development of the local automotive industry. It not only has an ongoing local assembly program but has also made this country a regional supply hub for its vehicles.
At the Global Automotive and Technology Expo 2026 (GATE2026) this week, the company is showing its locally-assembled models and also what is coming, as well as some of the powertrain developments and technologies.
Supporting future mobility ambitions
“For GWM, our presence at GATE2026 reflects both the progress we are making in Malaysia today and the possibilities we are exploring for tomorrow. We hope to encourage greater dialogue with government, industry and technology partners on how new-energy technologies could support Malaysia’s future mobility ambitions,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer, GWM Malaysia.
Local assembly program
A key focus of GWM’s presentation at GATE2026 is its local manufacturing footprint. Central to this is the Wey G9 Hi4 PHEV, a luxury MPV currently assembled in Malaysia and exported to Thailand. The model currently leads sales in the officially distributed luxury MPV segment in Malaysia.
Looking ahead, GWM plans to expand its local assembly line-up with two additional models: the Ora 5 HEV hatchback and the Haval H7 Hi4 PHEV mid-size SUV. The inclusion of these models reflects a broader multi-powertrain strategy aimed at localising hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid options for various vehicle segments.
Alongside its immediate product pipeline, GWM highlighted its proprietary drive systems, including the Hi2 and Hi4 electrified powertrain architectures.
Future technologies
The automaker also presented fuel-cell and hydrogen technology concepts developed by its subsidiary, FTXT, illustrating prospective applications for zero-emission energy beyond standard battery-electric platforms.
Next phase of growth
“Over the past 4 years, we have built a stronger foundation for GWM in Malaysia, supported by growing customer acceptance and confidence in our products and technologies. As we enter our next phase of growth, Malaysia is becoming increasingly important not only as a market, but also as part of our wider ASEAN strategy,” said Managing Director of Commercial Operations, Stan Li Hao.
