Doc’s Drive: Toyota Vios HEV GR Sport

The current generation of the Toyota Vios – fourth since the model line started in 2003 – was launched in 2023 – coming after the previous generation was around for some 10 years (with an extensive facelift in 2019). The 4th generation Vios started off with prices of RM89,600 and RM95,500 in two versions of 1.5E and 1.5G, respectively.

Electrified Vios
Fast forward to 2026 when UMW Toyota Motor introduced the hybrid electric version (HEV) of its popular B-segment sedan to Malaysians, with the top version being the Vios HEV GR Sport (GRS).

This top version has sportier styling and enhanced driving dynamics. Powered by Toyota’s fourth-generation HEV system, it delivers an impressive fuel consumption figure of approximately 28 kms/litre, which is pretty good for a car that has sportiness. Maximum combined power output is 111 ps with 141 Nm of maximum torque.

No need to recharge
The hybrid battery requires no external charging, allowing electrified driving with the convenience of a conventional ICE car. That’s a selling point by Toyota for its HEV models which gives the best of both worlds – electrified motoring without having to worry about finding a charging station.

Sport-tuned suspension
The GR Sport-tuned suspension and steering enable more stable highway cruising, with that heavier feel steering conveying a strong, solid centering instinct to drive ahead in a perfect straight line. There’s no ‘loose’ steering feel or that slight free play off to the left or right. Confidence inspiring for higher speed drive indeed.

I won’t be list out the many features in the Vios HEV GRS, short of sounding like a vehicle brochure’ specifications list. Let’s just say it’s the most complete Vios model to date since the first generation. The GR-inscribed front seats in the Vios HEV GRS are also comfy and properly sized now.

Ride comfort is still supple despite its stiffer springs. While the Vios HEV GRS benefits from a GR-tuned suspension that enhances handling compared to the standard Vios, despite the rear suspension being a torsion beam design. Such a set-up offers advantages in terms of simplicity, durability, possible weight saving and packaging efficiency, ie larger boot and flatter rear seat backrest at the flanks bilaterally.

Multilink would be nice
However, I think that the Vios HEV GRS at RM109,900, deserves a multi-link independent rear suspension. It’s about RM20,300 over the base model Vios 1.5E so a better suspension set-up would be good. Of course, that probably isn’t possible since there is only one platform for the Vios and having a different rear suspension would be a costly variation.

Sporty with efficiency and reliability
Overall, the Vios HEV GRS represents the most advanced and top-spec Vios ever offered in Malaysia. It successfully blends Toyota’s reputation of reliability and efficiency with a more dynamic driving character, making it an attractive option for buyers seeking a fuel-efficient sedan that also delivers sportier handling plus that little extra premium ownership experience.
