Quick look:
- Costing RM9,800 more than the TANK 300, this hybrid electric version offers a more premium alternative with additional performance.
- It is GWM’s second hybrid electric model after the HAVAL H6 HEV.
Those who have expected that there will be less choices in the market with the restrictive policies (said to protect the local industry) need not worry. The Chinese automakers are not slowing down in their rush to build up their offerings, which are now likely to focus on electrified models like HEVs (hybrid electric vehicles) since imported CBU fully electric vehicles will be restricted to very expensive models over RM200,000.
Some of the new models you will see in coming months would not be the result of the policy restrictions as they would have been planned some time back anyway. One of these is the new GWM TANK 300 HEV, previewed at the Penang Autoshow and now in showrooms.

Premium alternative to TANK 300
The TANK 300 HEV is the electrified version of the TANK 300 which has been on sale since 2024. Priced from RM259,800 (without insurance), this addition to GWM Malaysia’s off-road range of SUVs is a slightly more premium alternative (RM9,800 more) to the TANK 300 which has only a petrol engine. It is GWM’s second HEV model in Malaysia, the first being the HAVAL H6.
Visually, the vehicle retains the same silhouette and heavy-duty exterior trim as the TANK 300. This boxy look attracts many who like the classic SUV look for its ruggedness. While the Crystal Black and Pearl White are common to both models, there is also Sand Beige which is only available with the TANK 300 HEV.

Traditional SUV architecture
The TANK range has construction that follows traditions SUVs, rather than crossovers which are more like passenger cars. This means it has a bodyshell bolted to a ladder-frame, which is more suitable for off-road motoring and also for heavier loads.
The longitudinal beam cross-sections measure up to 160 mm by 130 mm, contributing to a substantial torsional rigidity to better handle demanding off-road conditions and twisting forces. The upper body structure also incorporates a significant volume of ultra-high-strength steel for enhanced structural integrity.

Extra 106 ps/268 Nm from electric motor
The major technical departure is found under the bonnet where the 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine in the TANK 300 is linked to an electric motor in a hybrid electric powertrain. On its own, the engine generates 245 ps/380 Nm, and the electric motor contributes an additional 106 ps/268 Nm.
Through intelligent sharing depending on driving conditions, the proportion of engine and motor power varies constantly. With the motor doing some of the work of moving the vehicle, fuel can be saved over the long run, making HEVs highly fuel-efficient. Additionally, the electric motor enhances low-end acceleration as it generates peak torque from almost standstill.

As a genuine off-roader, the TANK 300 HEV has a full-time on-demand 4×4 system with a transfer case that allows for a low range of gear ratios to tackle difficult terrain.
Drivers of today’s off-road SUVs can enjoy their adventures in greater safety and have a ‘co-driver’ which can help them optimise drive settings for different conditions. In the past, people had to learn off-road driving skills but now, the computer ‘co-driver’ manages things.

The electronic terrain management system in the TANK 300 HEV has 7 selectable driving modes – Normal, Eco, Sport, Snow, Mud, Sand, and 4Low.
Special features for manoeuverability
A special feature of the SUV is TANK Turn Assist, which tightens the turning circle and is useful in the jungle where open space may be limited. When activated, the Tank Turn Assist system automatically brakes the inside rear wheel (like on a tank) so the vehicle can turn around in a smaller radius.

When surface conditions are very challenging and the speed has to be very slow, the Crawl Control system automatically modulates engine output and braking to make manoeuvring easier.
Utilitarian cabin with premium ambience
The cabin has a balance of utilitarian ambience with premium materials and amenities. These include Nappa leather upholstery, an advanced infotainment setup, and a 9-speaker Infinity premium audio system.

As would be expected of a premium SUV, safety systems are of a high level and the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is up to Level 2. This allows a vehicle’s computer to control both steering and speed simultaneously under specific conditions but the driver must remain ready to take over at all times.
The ADAS for the TANK 300 HEV integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking with Junction Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Centering, Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert with automatic braking functionality. A 360-degree camera and Hill Descent Control are also standard equipment.

The HEV model also comes with smart app connectivity to remotely monitor vehicle parameters including tyre pressure, fuel levels, battery status, and the security of doors and windows. The app also enables remote operation of the climate control, seat ventilation, and sunroof. Additionally, an automated parking assist system has been added to manage hands-free parking manoeuvres in urban areas.
