High safety standards for upcoming GWM WEY G9 MPV

GWM Malaysia will soon launch a premium MPV – the WEY G9 – which was previewed at the 2024 KL International Mobility Show. The estimated price is expected to be less than RM300,000 and It will become the first Chinese New Energy (ie electrified) premium MPV to be assembled in Malaysia.

With the addition of the G9, GWM reinforces its global strategy of ‘All Scenarios · All Powertrains · All Users’, offering Malaysian consumers a premium mobility choice that blends technology, safety, and luxury.

The G9 will join GWM Malaysia’s current range which consists of the locally-assembled HAVAL H6 HEV SUV, TANK 300 and TANK 500 HEV luxury off-road SUVs, and EV lifestyle models (ORA GOOD CAT, ORA 07).

Besides the local market, the locally-assembled G9 will also be exported to neighbouring righthand drive markets such as Thailand and Indonesia.

The ‘living room’ is within a robust ‘safety house’ engineered with 4 core safety technologies. These technologies have made it possible for the G9 to earned the C-NCAP top safety rating of 5 stars.

Structured like a ”fortress’
Much attention has gone into the structural engineering of the G9 to create a ‘fortress’ that protects the occupants on all sides from all types of accidents. The structure and bodywork have an industry-leading 81.96% application of high-strength steel, with 2000 MPa ultra-high-strength steel in the A and B-pillars and in critical zones, ensuring superior structural integrity of the cabin.

China’s first hot-blow-formed tube (1500 MPa) is integrated into the A-pillar and this is 3 times stronger than standard beams, improving frontal and side crash safety while maintaining visibility.

Should the G9 roll over, the crush resistance of the roof is 12 tons, achieved through a load-bearing body design with a longitudinal + 7 cross-member frame structure, closed door-ring design, and hot-stamped front cross beam.

A large percentage of accidents are usually frontal collisions and to provide strong protection, the front bumper beam includes a 6-series aluminium extrusion, achieving 71.4% forward coverage. Additionally, the energy-absorption system adopts a wide-body all-aluminium crash box, full-frame sub-chassis, and 4 longitudinal + 7 cross-member frame structure ensure effective energy absorption across crash scenarios, dispersing impact forces.

Large-size side airbags
In severe accidents, the large-size side curtain airbags will deploy, providing full-length protection for every occupants, even those in the third row. The extended inflation duration of 6 seconds with over 112 litres of inflated volume offers maximum cushioning and protection, especially against head injuries, in rollover or severe collision scenarios.

A tube-frame reinforced skeleton with 0.6 mm full-metal backboard for the third row seats provides superior support and collision protection.

Fully protected battery pack
The battery pack for the electrified powertrain (PHEV) has been tested in extreme conditions (rain, heat, shocks) and passed 89 rigorous tests. To prevent water entry, there’s an advanced sealing design with enhanced splash-proof caps that withstands 10 MPa high-pressure and 85°C hot water jets.

4-layer side impact protection ensures the battery pack is not damaged while 6-layer bottom protection with high-strength structural reinforcement resists gravel, underbody collisions, scraping, and water immersion.
