Although PROTON has been busy developing its EV models, it has not forgotten about its bestseller – the Saga. After a run of 9 years, the fourth generation of Malaysia’s first National Car officially goes on sale today.

Three versions are available – Premium, Executive and Standard – priced between RM38,990 and RM49,990. Buy one before 2026 ends and you get another RM1,000 off!

As promised earlier, the first 20,000 customers who have booked before today enjoy a launch package of free scheduled service for the first year (within a maximum 20,000 kms) and a Saga Touch’nGo card.

The new Saga has two major changes – adoption of Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) and a brand new 1.5-litre 4-cylinder i-GT engine. This engine, with dual variable valve timing, is similar to that in the latest X50, However, it does not have a turbocharger and uses a simpler electronic fuel delivery system, producing an output of 120 ps/150 Nm. Fuel economy has always been one of the Saga’s strong points and up to 14.04% improvement is claimed.

Two transmissions are available – a new CVT for the Premium version and a more conventional 4-speed AT for the Standard and Executive versions. The 4-speeder is carried over from the current generation and is from Aisin. For those who still want a manual transmission, too bad that demand is deemed to be insufficient to justify offering it.

The new Saga is more feature-packed with two digi-graphic displays. For those who consider connectivity important, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, so no waiting months for the OTA update. The infotainment system is smartphone-inspired with an adaptive interface to make access easier and faster.

The driver of the new Saga gets an Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) with active and passive safety features never before offered for this model. Notable safety systems are the Door-Opening Warning (first in class), Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking (including for motorcyclists), and 6 airbags to provide protection to front and rear passengers.
